A Little History On Lafayette

Lafayette is a city of heritage, mostly because it has a rich history behind it. The city was founded way back in 1878 by Mary Miller. Mary and her husband Lafayette acquired land through the Homestead Act back n 1871, but three years after they moved to Boulder. Lafayette Miller opened a butcher shop in Boulder and became a prominent name in the city. He died in 1878, and after his death, Mary moved back to the farm that they had acquired.

It was in 1884 when coal was discovered on the farm, and since it was the coal mining era, the area became a huge part of that boom. People started coming in to the farm and the surrounding areas for the coal. Mary Miller designated a huge part of her farm (150 acres) for the town in 1888, which was then named Lafayette after her husband. Two years after that, in 1890, that area was then incorporated as a town.

Mary Miller played a huge role on the town's initial development. Aside from establishing one of the largest coal mines in the area, she also became president of a local bank. She played a major role on the development and layout of the area, and that charming turn of the century influence can still be felt today. Lafayette, as a town, flourished during those days, and within two decades it became a booming powerstation that served different neighborhood towns like Fort Collins, Boulder and Louisville.
